I chat regularly with entrepreneurs who have multiple “things” going on, or more than one stream of income. I also hear, how for the most part, they are sometimes unsure about what to say when people ask that one question….“so, what do you do?”
Let me first say this, when people ask me what I do, it’s hard for me to give a formal, normal title to sum it up. I could say – Marketing Consultant…but thing is, I do so much more than that. Truth be told, I DO quite a few things…when I wrap it all up, I say…I help people create Life Freedom!
Because technically, that’s what I do!
Of course, to the average person, that doesn’t click right away. If I tell that to someone in person, most times I get a blank, confused stare. With someone inquiring online, the original question is followed by…“what does that mean?”
What it means is that I am very passionate about inspiring others (primarily women), to get out of the box and be totally comfortable and confident with who they are to their core…An Entrepreneur!
Now, the way in which I help people create Life Freedom varies…and that’s usually what people really mean when they ask, “what do you do?”
This is where you have to know ahead of time, what you plan to say about what it is you do in your business. Take time to write your ideas and thoughts down. Remember, this exercise is for you to formulate on paper, what you offer or do for people. It only has to sound right and feel right to you.
Going back to what I tell people ~ “I help people create Life Freedom”, I follow up with this…
I do 2 things really…I show entrepreneurs how to use online marketing (tools and methods), to build their business while leveraging their time and income. I also help aspiring entrepreneurs start a home based business and earn income from home.
That helps people understand what I do.
That’s also what you must do…help people get it, or see if what you do, can help them.
If I come straight out with – “I’m a Marketing Consultant”…I could lose potential clients because they may assume I’m not what they need because in reality, they don’t even know what that means.
When I tell people I can help them create Life Freedom…they are interested in finding out, what exactly that means!
The point is, the majority of people will ALWAYS try to fit you into some sort of box with titles. They will always try to tell you what they think you should do.
However, entrepreneurs are Freedom Creators! We believe in creating the life we deserve to live. Whatever that means for you, go for it!
A true entrepreneur lives in the essence of who we were created to be…without compromise, with no apologizes.
Today I wanted to share this quick word of encouragement…DO NOT let people keep you in a box. Just because they can’t associate you with a title does not give them the right to attach one to you.
YOU and you alone define who you are. There is no wrong…only what’s RIGHT for you!
Embrace it, own it and be who you are…an entrepreneur!

Great post Tamyka! This is exactly what I have been dealing with lately, in fact, I just had a conversation yesterday with someone about how some people stay inside while others live outside of the box.
I burned my box a long time ago! 🙂
To me, it’s a matter of being passionate about something that helps people and allows me to earn a living, but not necessarily executing it like everyone else but in a way that works for me.
