Last night I watched the 2012 BET Awards all the way through to the end. Usually, I have a difficult time staying engaged because I don’t keep up with all these new young artists popping up on the scene. Mostly because I don’t understand a word they are saying.
But even so, my Twitter feed was live. Full of grown-ups also watching the awards which kept me entertained during the boring parts. I would have to say there were two highlights of the show, the heartwarming tribute to Whitney Houston and the Cadillac Lifetime Achievement Award presented to Frankie Beverly and Maze for their unforgettable contribution to music.
Sing what you want to sing, play what you want to play.
Don’t fall for the flavor of the week.
That statement Mr. Beverly shared while on stage, was his word of encouragement to new and aspiring musicians. Those on the “come up”.
He was encouraging them to follow their own heart when it came to the kind of music they want to share with the world. The kind of music. The type of sound. The flow that comes from the soul. The kind they are passionate about creating.
The inspirational words that apply to your entrepreneurial journey
The words, “Don’t fall for the flavor of the week” resonated with me as an entrepreneur because it is sound advice you can apply to your own business.
Every day we get emails, we see updates on Facebook all about the newest, latest, greatest “whatever”. You may be one of the many who fall into the trap. The idea that you NEED to be – MORE informed, MORE equipped, MORE educated in order to run your business.
Let me give you a bit of advice, sometimes less IS more.
When you are an entrepreneur, focus is vital. Before you…fall for the flavor of the week (meaning: GET DISTRACTED)…you’d better be sure your business foundation is sound.
Master your skills, develop your strategies and get things in order to allow cash to flow in your business. You’ve got to learn to trust your own judgement and stop feeling compelled to buy into instant solutions.
Everything you need to grow your business, you already have within you. Yes, it may come easier for some. Others may need some guidance or direction to bring it all together in a way that works for them.
If you fall into the second category, I can help you create a strategy and a plan that makes sense to you.
Hearing the words of Mr. Frankie Beverly, a musical legend, just reconfirmed how special it is to be an entrepreneur. It is a way of living that allows you to be your true authentic self.

What an inspirational post. Thanks so much Tamyka! As I’m starting a nonprofit organization I get that overwhelming vibe from all the things “to do.” Even down to creating a website so I can start my own blog.
