When you start a new business, the first thing you think about is, “how do I find people to talk to?”
Most people don’t want to bother their family and friends because they don’t want them to think they are crazy. But, the truth is…if you want to get into profit mode quickly, that is the best place to start.
Now, before you roll your eyes, and groan about how they won’t be interested…
Or, how you’d rather “find people” on the internet…
Let me explain why you should be prospecting for leads, amongst the people you already know.
Why You Should Be Prospecting For Leads
Business is about the people. It’s not about you, or your feelings. That’s just the harsh reality. You have something to offer, and that’s what you’ve got to do!
Reason #1 – You need to get the word out
So many have this preconceived notion that we can build a successful business without talking to people because we’ve got the internet.
Put a system in place and BAM, instant cashflow…
NOT!
Don’t get me wrong, I preach systems all the time because they are definitely needed, however…having a system to build online is a small part of a bigger process. Which means, if you don’t already know how to generate leads…you still have no one to talk to about your business.
Isn’t that the goal?
My advice…kick your EGO to the curb, forget what people are going to say or think (who cares anyway), and let people know what you are doing.
THIS IS BUSINESS…it’s not personal. You have a product or service people need…yes? So, it’s your duty to tell them about it. Whether they are interested or not, is not your concern.
Get the word out.
It’s as simple as – “Hey (name), I just wanted to let you know about my new business. I help people to (the result your product/service provides) by (whatever you do/offer)! If you or anyone you know would benefit, let me know and I’d be happy to share more info!”
Then keep it moving!
You’d actually be surprised at how many positive responses you will get. Even from those family members you thought would not be supportive.
Don’t be attached to the outcome, just focus on your goal of prospecting to get the word out.
Reason #2 – You need the practice
When you are just starting out, you’ve got to learn how to be a good listener, and how to have a natural conversation with people. In other words…
You need to develop your communication skills.
We all know that in order to get good at something, we have to practice. It’s easier to practice with people you know. Yes, they may be more judgemental and critical, but dealing with objections now, will help you handle them better later.
Plus, you’ll need tough skin anyway…that’s what family is for, right? Just kidding…(not).
Whenever I launch a new venture, and start prospecting my warm market (people I know), I never expect much from them.
My one and only goal is to let them know, and use their response as a way to improve my technique.
Reason #3 – You need to get in action mode…NOW!
Trust me, I get it…
I prefer marketing online over prospecting for leads any day. However, internet marketing takes skill and time.
Yes, it’s very effective when you know what you are doing. It’s also a passive strategy that gives you results over a period of time.
When entrepreneurs choose internet marketing over prospecting…the majority quit before they get the results they are seeking.
I agree, it is way easier to attract people to you by way of internet marketing. But, internet marketing is a method that takes more involvement on your part with regards to creating value to get people coming to you.
In my experience, it goes hand in hand with prospecting for leads. In other words, doing both simultaneously. Internet marketing is a passive strategy, while prospecting is an active one.
If you want to create a solid foundation for your business, you will need to get in action mode sooner rather than later.
Start Prospecting For Results
Make a 30-90 day commitment to do active marketing – prospecting, to grow your business. Set a goal, define your WHY, and make it greater than you.
When you are working toward something that is not all about you, you are more inclined to do what needs to be done to achieve it.
So, don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone. Put on your big girl panties and do what you have to do to have the lifestyle you desire. Of course it won’t be easy. But anything worth having is worth working your butt off for!
Don’t you agree?
