Is Facebook Just Another Passing Fad?

Facebook LikeWell, we all know nothing lasts forever, remember when Myspace was the place to be? With all the recent hoopla surrounding Facebook’s recent IPO and lawsuit troubles, it kind of makes you wonder…is it really going to be here to stay?

Now, I’m not one to judge but I do like to utilize my common sense on more than a regular basis and in my opinion, it just may NOT be.

Trust me when I tell you, I LOVE Facebook! I enjoy connecting with new and interesting people and hey…some of my best friends are Facebookers!

But how would it affect the way you do business if over time, Facebook’s popularity began to dwindle or one day…disappeared all together? Would your business and network survive?

I stumbled upon an interesting article on, addressing this very topic which prompted me to write this post and take it a step deeper to challenge your thoughts today.

The point I’m trying to make…don’t put all your eggs in one basket (especially if the basket isn’t even yours to begin with.)

Far more than I wish to notice, I see some of my sister entrepreneurs creating their entire brand existence, on Facebook. When I say entire existence, I mean, they don’t even have a website for their company.

Their Facebook page IS there website and has all the bells and whistles – eCommerce apps for people to shop directly from the page, full blown contact forms, product catalogs…the list goes on.

Now, for a business that is simply expanding their presence to reach their target audience on social networks, that’s cool, but when you choose to step into a risk that could literally KILL your business, that is an option you should NOT be willing to take.

You have got to start seeing the value of developing your own platform to brand your business.

You need to build a credible brand that creates trust with your customers

If your company only “lives” on a BORROWED piece of a social network or a FREE hosted account (meaning not with your own domain name), what will you do when those spaces close there doors and take your RENTED business presence with it?

How do you create a professional reputation and more than a community of fans – a loyal customer base, if you are not thinking and planning for the growth of your business?

Let me be real with you, if you can’t or aren’t willing to pay the small investment (roughly $20) to purchase a domain name and web hosting for your business, something is off in the way you THINK you should be operating your business online.

Would you trust a business coach or consultant who told you they could help you build a six figure income online and they didn’t even own their domain?

How about a web designer promising to create for you a gorgeous, profit pulling eCommerce website and their website is hosted on a free space with a template not even designed by them?


Come on ladies…we’ve GOT to do better!

YES, Facebook looks as though it is here to stay…but just 5 short years ago, we could have said the same about Myspace.

Times change and the world of social networking and internet marketing change even quicker. What I hope you get from reading this post is that it is so important to plant your roots where YOU can grow.

If your heart is not fully invested in the LONG term vision and mission of your business, to the point where you can see way beyond TODAY, maybe you need to take a step back and make a few assessments.

  1. I think every business should have their own domain name and website for all of the reasons that you mentioned. I also think it’s important for people to build their brands on social networking sites to extend their brand and have conversations with their customers.

    The problem I see with brands and businesses on social networking sites is that they try to be everywhere and post a few things in a lot places. If they build a vibrant community on just a few sites there is a better chance of their target audience finding them and engaging with them on a regular basis.

    I prefer to build up my Twitter and Facebook because that is where my target audience and customers are. By concentrating my efforts there I can engage better with my followers and get to know them so I can provide content that will be useful for them.

    I’m slowly exploring Google+, but only to connect with other bloggers and writers since my target audience doesn’t use it.

    1. Totally agree Lisa, I always say…quality over quantity! What good is it if you are all over the place if it’s not benefiting everyone. I’m building up on Facebook and Twitter too, it is where I make the best connections and build relationships, that’s what is important to me.

    1. Thanks so much Donna, I agree that many people won’t listen but kudos to the ones who do! I think it comes with learning – trial and error, and some will just need to learn it on their own.
