When I hear things like, “SocialĀ  Media is a waste of time” or “Social Media doesn’t work” coming from the mouths (or emails) of entrepreneurs, it makes me shake my head in wonder. Maybe I’m out of line, but unless you are a hermit, I just can’t wrap my mind around how being social and connecting with people, doesn’t “work” for someone.

Maybe I’m a little biased since I built my entire online business on the principles of social media – connecting and building relationships with people, back in 2009.

The reason why many entrepreneurs and small businesses don’t see the benefit of using social media to build their business is because they have the wrong idea about what they should be doing.

Coming from a traditional business (and corporate mindset) as many of those struggling are, they assume it is a way to advertise their products and services without really taking time to understand or value the culture.

I don’t know how many times it must be said but the reason why so many work at home moms are building thriving million dollar businesses from the kitchen table, during nap time is because they found social media as a way to CONNECT with real people who share the same interests and created COMMUNITY around their passion.

How Cool Is That? It’s not rocket science, it’s MOM-OLOGY! Duh!

Social media is the ultimate way to share with people and form genuine relationships online. When you stand for something relevant, you WILL stand out.

If you shift your focus from making a buck, to helping other people transform an area of their own life, you become someone others WANT to follow and be connected with.

I’ve got a little challenge for you…If you would commit to giving value (something really helpful) to your friends on Facebook and quality resources to your tweeps on Twitter every day, you will see how the use of social media can have a positive impact on the growth of your business.

You become known as someone who genuinely cares about people and in that process, you become recognized for your work too!

STOP trying to sell your business using social media, instead – BE yourself, SHARE your beliefs, CONNECT with like-minded people, INSPIRE others to action by EMPOWERING them to believe in themselves.

Watch this video, if it resonates with you…you “get” social media! (view on YouTube)

BE SOCIAL – share this post with your friends, they will love you for it! (*smile*)

Tamyka, great post. It’s a powerful reminder that social media is just that – social, interactive, and the perfect platform to connect with others in ways you could not otherwise.

Social media is a waste of time, if you don’t know what you’re doing here, why, and who you’re trying to reach. Grateful to have a great community of folks, like you and Zenobia and many others, which I’ve connected with over the years. I know that continuing to learn about social media and about business has made this so not a waste of time for me. I know why I’m here and who I want to be around.

I’m honored to be in your circle too, Donna! Knowing WHO and WHY are two very important reasons that definitely help us all, not waste time!

It makes me cringe Tamyka. I have met some of the most phenomenal, inspiring and motivating women through social media. Women that I may have never encountered otherwise that have said the right thing at the right time to keep me going and vice versa.

Rhachelle, I couldn’t agree with you anymore! If it wasn’t for the women I’ve met through social media, I probably wouldn’t be here today! All of the encouragement, support and partnerships are priceless!
