In business, social influence can be easier described as being a leader. A leader is one who is able to encourage others to change or grow. And in my opinion, John Quincy Adams said it best, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”

So, if you have business experience or a level of expertise in a particular industry or field, you can establish social influence.

  • What area of focus or study holds your attention?
  • What is a topic or subject you have great knowledge in?
  • What is something you are truly passionate about and enjoy learning regularly?

Answer these questions and you will see how a topic of interest could evolve into your area of focused expertise. Once you’ve gained some clarity, you can begin to shift your efforts and start to build your business with social influence.

How to create social influence

Of course you do, it’s what everyone wants to know.

Creating social influence is easiest when your desire is to educate others by sharing insight and knowledge. You see, you have to be willing to give to others in order to build a level of trust. Be genuine in your efforts to educate and train those who look to you for guidance and direction.

What do you want to be known for? What are you most motivated by and willing to share?

Think about how you can deliver that insight with the people who will grow to follow you. Those who have similar beliefs, interests and desires as you. Be consistent, stay focused and watch your audience blossom!

Once you have begun developing your influence online, more and more people will naturally become attracted to you – to what you offer. You’ll have created a brand and loyal community, that is inspired by your message.

Every person online who has inspired you in the way you think, the way you see things or the way you do things in your personal or business life, as established a form of social influence. They have carved out their very own corner of expertise and have become an authority figure or a thought leader.

It didn’t happen for them over night.

The same holds true for you. You can become an authority online too. And just like they did, you have to learn how to develop your social influence to build your business.

Know your strengths and use them. You can’t be all things to everybody. Embrace the things you do well and display those skills in the marketplace. You build an audience around what you do best, so keep that in mind!
