It can be tough in the beginning, trying to figure out how to put the pieces together to make your entrepreneurial dream of time freedom and more money…a reality.

You start to wonder about your online marketing strategy (or lack thereof), and what you should to do to change it and make it better.

The main reason why so many entrepreneurs struggle in this area is because they are missing the biggest component. It’s not due to lack of marketing skill or a social media presence…in fact, those things are easy to fix. The often overlooked reason why your online marketing strategy seems to be a wast of time is simple…you aren’t getting results.

WHY?

Because you haven’t developed a content marketing plan.

You see, doing business online…no matter what business you are in, requires you to do a few things:

  • Know what you offer
  • Understand your audience
  • Attract them to you
  • Engage them
  • Educate them
  • Inspire them to action

All of this will happen through the content you push out. Without content, you cannot create the kind of business that will effectively match the requirements to meet your business goals. In other words, it will be much harder for your business to grow and generate revenue.

What can do to stop wasting time and create an effective online marketing strategy?

Before you even think about sharing stuff on Facebook, Google+ or LinkedIn, you want to make sure you have an idea of what your content marketing strategy will be and how you will implement it to grow your business online.

#1 Design a Plan – If you want to have solid results in your online business, you’ve got to have a clearly defined plan of action. NO going with the flow…you’ll be out of business before you even begin. Outline your goals and your mission before you determine your actual plan.

This will provide you with a guideline and direction to help you keep focus on your purpose.

#2 Manage Your Time – This will require discipline. So many women entrepreneurs I know really struggle with time management. Especially those who are coming from a corporate environment. As a small business owner…YOU are the boss. No time clocks to punch, no one to tell you what to do and when to do it. This is YOUR job!

If you do not hold yourself accountable to managing your time…you are wasting it. PERIOD. Learn how to schedule your daily activities – business AND personal. Schedule time for learning, marketing, social media, customers, development, etc.

THIS IS KEY TO YOUR SUCCESS!

#3 Social Media – Social networking is a powerful TOOL to grow your business online. However, you must be really careful on how you spend your hours each day on these platforms. Limit your time and plan your efforts before you head over to Facebook.

Use complimentary tools like HootSuite or Buffer to pre-schedule and automate some of your posts ahead of time. This will eliminate the need to feel like you need to be present all the time. You will however, want to check in to interact with your followers, respond to comments and answer their questions in a timely manner.

#4 Use a System – A big part of having an effective online marketing strategy is using a system that will automate much of the sales process for you. If you are spending your days answering customer inquires, manually processing sales and providing customer service…you have NO time left to efficiently market your business.

If you have technical skills, you can create your own business management system like I did. The core element is my blog. I also use email marketing services to build my customer base, and payment solutions to automate sales. Together, these tools create my system and work for me around the clock, even when I’m not working.

Of course, there are other alternatives to developing your own system. You can learn exactly what online business owners are doing to get more leads, sales, and cash flow using the internet.

    Social Media Activities are a waste of time if you don’t define your goals priorly. Proper strategic planning is the key to social media success. The points mentioned above are just the basics, sometimes you need to think out of the box to make the things work.
