4 Reasons You Are Not Ready For EntrepreneurshipIt’s been my observation…

NON-entrepreneurs think entrepreneurship is some how easier than traditional work. They see us on Facebook often, watch us ‘brag’ about how happy we are, and how much we love our lifestyle. For a lot of us, that’s just our truth.

We also know, that just because we live our passions and choose to pursue our purpose in life…doesn’t mean the road isn’t always smooth.

In fact, entrepreneurship forces us to remain on our toes…always strategizing, always masterminding, always brainstorming, always thinking, always creating.

We don’t shut down or turn off at 5pm.

I believe that if being an entrepreneur was so easy, way more people would do it. But they don’t because it’s not for everyone. The reality is, you have to be bred for this life. For US, this is not a JOB, it’s not what we DO…it’s who we were created to be.

As a Business Mentor, I get a lot of messages from people wanting to know why they aren’t getting the kind of results they wanted or what it is they are doing wrong, because their business is not producing.

For one, people seem to think becoming an entrepreneur means you gain instant success (and credibility)…um, no. If you want to be an entrepreneur, you are going to have to work HARDER than you ever have, on any job, you’ve ever had.

Secondly, you are going to have to work even HARDER than that…on yourself. (Took me a while to get this one.) When you ‘GET’ that…you will begin to see your dreams manifest in your life.

Those who aren’t really ready, or cut out for entrepreneurship are those who struggle with one or more of these:

4 Reasons Why You Are Not Ready

#1 You Have To Many Excuses – When the first sentence out of your mouth is a reason WHY you can’t do something, BECAUSE of something else, I can pretty much tell where the conversation is going to go. I will be real…I don’t have time for excuse makers. Life happens to all of us, I go through just like the next person. If I let every excuse stop me from working my business…you wouldn’t be reading this now.

If you can find an excuse for every reason why your business is failing; I have kids, I work a job, I go to school, I don’t have money, I don’t have time, My husband, My wife, My parents, My dog…I mean, really? When do you have time to put positive energy into what you want to do?

People who have a thousand and one excuses are those who are too busy talking themselves out of their own success, they don’t realize that’s why they aren’t having success. I don’t do excuses.

You cannot successfully build a business when you have already convinced yourself of all the reasons why you can’t.

#2 You Lack Self Confidence – Being an entrepreneur can be hard on the ego. At a regular job, you are hired to perform a task based on your skillset. As an entrepreneur, you’ve got to learn how to do everything yourself…and when you don’t know how, that can hit some people hard.

I see this area as a huge struggle for those who have a hard time adjusting to the transition of employee to entrepreneur. They have difficulties shifting their thinking. You can’t just ‘show up’ in the role of entrepreneurship like at a job. You may have been well respected, or thought of very highly for your expertise on a job, and get a reality check when that becomes way less important in our world.

Often times, real life experience trumps formal education on this side of the fence. There is a great learning curve for those coming out of corporate America that they are not used to. All that book knowledge won’t cut it in this field and for some, that will require some mental reprogramming.

On the flip side, some people don’t take well to perceived rejection. When someone says no to your business, that is not a no to you…but what you are offering at the time. It’s the same as when you go to a restaurant and the waitress asks if you want coffee or water…if you say no thanks, I doubt she will quit her job because you told her no.

Same difference…you’ve got to be able to detach yourself from the outcome to avoid your confidence level taking a hit.

#3 You Embrace Fear – This is very common, but just like the other reasons, with some work…you can get over it. People have so many fears. Fear of success, fear of failure, fear of the unknown, so much so, they are never able to actually move forward.

When you allow fear to take over, you get caught up in making excuses too. That’s why it is so important to work on yourself more than anything else. Fear and victory in business, can’t happen at the same time.

We all feel fear…but we’ve got to develop the ability to work through what we feel. Fear keeps you stuck and makes you procrastinate. It’s only a feeling and can be conquered.

#4 You Lack the Right Mindset – As an entrepreneur, having the right mindset is the most important asset you can have if you want success. You don’t have to take my word for it, see with these wise entrepreneurs have to say.

If you are not willing to change the way you think, the people you associate with, and the way you handle difficult situations, entrepreneurship may not be for you. That’s because you have to be committed to growing and developing yourself. You have got to learn to be comfortable with stepping into a leadership position.

There is no one to tell you what to do or how to do it…you have to have a strong mindset that will keep you focused on NOT giving up on your dream.

Naturally, we will all have obstacles and circumstances that can keep us from achieving success, these four just so happen to be the main ones I see keeping entrepreneurs from living the life they desire.

Truth is, no matter what your current situation, if entrepreneurship is your desire, nothing should prevent you from throwing in the towel.

Thanks Tamyka, for keeping it real as you always do. Those 4 reasons will hopefully unblock some challenges for “wanna be” entrepreneurs. It takes consistent, persistent effort along with determination and personal (mindset) growth. As you stated in a nutshell, “If you want to be an entrepreneur, you are going to have to work HARDER than you ever have, on any job, you’ve ever had.” Period. 🙂

Wowza! This is a must read for anyone with excuses! You had me with the title, I was just saying this same thing to a group of aspiring entrepreneurs. “It is who we were created to be”… I couldn’t have said it better myself!
